U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Newton-Azrak Station seized more than 34 pounds of cocaine and meth during a routine vehicle stop on northbound Interstate 15 on October 21.
The bust unfolded when agents pulled over a northbound vehicle and noticed several inconsistencies during questioning. After obtaining the driver’s consent to search the vehicle, agents discovered a hidden compartment packed with suspected narcotics.
An inspection revealed 144 bundled packages of cocaine weighing approximately 33.4 pounds, with an estimated value of $641,280. Agents also recovered a 1.02-pound bundle of methamphetamine valued at roughly $1,000.
“Criminal organizations should understand that our layered approach to border security means there is no winning for them; they will not escape enforcement,” said San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Justin De La Torre.
Officials emphasized that whether smugglers attempt to cross directly at the border or transport illicit cargo miles inland, agents remain fully prepared to intercept them.
“We will pursue these threats wherever we encounter them, disrupt their operations, and ensure those responsible face consequences. There is no place in our communities where smugglers and transnational criminal organizations should expect to operate with impunity,” he added.
The driver, the vehicle, and the seized narcotics were transferred to the Border Patrol station for further investigation and legal processing.

Cross-Border Operation Leads to Arrests After Laser Strike on Border Patrol Agent
A joint operation between the U.S. Border Patrol and the Tijuana Police Department led to the arrest of multiple suspects on October 19 following a laser strike targeted at federal agents along the U.S.–Mexico border.
The incident occurred when a Border Patrol agent reported being repeatedly illuminated by a green laser originating from near the border wall. Agents identified a suspect vehicle and coordinated with Mexican law enforcement to track its movement across the border into Tijuana.
Tijuana Police officers located and intercepted the vehicle shortly thereafter. Upon investigation, authorities discovered the vehicle was stolen, recovered the laser device, and took several individuals into custody.
“When someone endangers a law enforcement agent at the border, the international border should not serve as a shield against accountability,” said San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Justin De La Torre.
