Tijuana.- A prominent boxer was shot to death at a gym Tuesday evening after arguing with his promoter, allegedly over a woman, according to the municipal police department.

Humberto Tapia, 25, was well known in the boxing community because he had fought since he was 12 years old, participating in amateur tournaments and even representing Baja California in the Mexican Olympic trials.

He had logged 32 professional fights, principally in U.S. cities such as Los Angeles, Pasadena, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Boston.

According to the police report, the shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the boxing gym Hermanos Ulloa, located in the La Mesa district. Adolfo Huerta, 36, a promoter and a gym employee allegedly argued with Tapia, who was training there.

Huerta took out a Glock 9mm pistol and shot Tapia in the stomach, the report said. The boxer died on the way to the Red Cross hospital.

One of the trainers who worked at the gym, Luis Román, 39, told police investigators that Huerta had killed the boxer because he was going out with his wife.

Police arrested Huerta and seized the gun, as well as cartridges.

Tapia’s last professional fight was on Nov. 20 against Danny O´Connor in Connecticut.
