This Friday November 28, at 7 PM, the Centro Cultural Tijuana will host the opening of the 8th International Biennial of Standards.
The project was started in 1996 by Tijuana-based artist Marta Palau. Using the "standard" or banner as a form of artistic expression, Palau wanted to situate Tijuana as a point of both continental and cultural exchange. Every two years, thirty national and international artists participate in this show, and to date, over 250 artists have shown their work in this biennial.
Palau envisions the banner as the ideal form to capture the reality of the border. The banner–with its two sides–is "a new expressive medium that can take the idea of the border and reorient it as art, reflecting the panorama of conflict and ambiguity," Palau noted in an interview.
Looking back on the past, Palau remarks that this show has been an opportunity for Tijuana artists to achieve recognition. "For Tijuana," Palau notes, "the Biennial of Standards has been an important platform for regional art, in that we have seen benefits not only for artists from our region, but also through the dialogue this has generated, for the public in general."
CECUT is pleased to welcome people from both sides of the border to enjoy this exhibition. The exhibition will continue through March 2015 in the entrance hall of the Museum of the Californias.
Open every day from 9 AM to 8 PM. Admission is free of charge.
