A British baker’s criticism of Mexican bread culture has ignited a fierce backlash online, just months after he opened a new bakery in Mexico City.

Richard Hart, who recently launched a bakery in the capital, faced calls for a boycott after resurfaced comments from a 2024 podcast went viral this week. In the interview, Hart made a series of sweeping critiques, calling Mexican flour β€œpoor quality,” describing the classic bolillo as an β€œugly bread,” and dismissing pan dulce pastries, claiming they’re β€œnot even bread, it’s cake.”

The remarks quickly drew sharp condemnation from local food writers, chefs, and the public, many of whom questioned why someone with such views would open a business in Mexico.

Richard Hart’s Apology

Under public pressure, chef Richard Hart apologized to the Mexican people, expressing deep regret for his remarks. He acknowledged his error, stating that since his move to Mexico he has come to deeply appreciate the nation’s culture and people.

Hart clarified that his words did not reflect his true respect for Mexico, admitting he failed to act with the sensitivity required of a guest. He vowed to learn from the experience and to prove his respect for Mexican culture through future actions.
