In celebration of Juneteenth, California is offering a free special-edition Historian Passport, granting unlimited access to more than 30 state historic parks through the end of 2026.

Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom announced the initiative on social media, encouraging residents and visitors to take advantage of the offer ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend. The complimentary passport remains valid for the rest of the year, making it a timely opportunity for history enthusiasts and outdoor explorers alike.

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and celebrating African American heritage and contributions to the nation’s history.

The Historian Passport provides entry to historic parks, museums, and cultural sites that explore the diverse narratives of California’s past from Native American tribes and immigrant communities to Gold Rush settlers and civil rights advocates. These sites aim to reflect the multifaceted story of the state and the people who helped shape it.

The announcement arrives amid a broader national conversation about how American history is represented in public spaces.

In his social media post, Governor Newsom drew a contrast with US President Donald Trump, stating that while Trump attempts to rewrite the nation’s past, California embraces it and learns from it.

The offer also comes in the wake of federal policy changes: in 2025, the U.S. administration eliminated free entry to national parks on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth, replacing those with “free patriotic days” on Flag Day and Trump’s birthday.

The free pass program is supported by donations from the California State Parks Foundation and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation.
