The first edition of the Calimax Stroke Play Cup will take place on Friday, November 14, and Saturday, November 15, at Club Campestre Tijuana, marking the start of a new sports tradition at one of the city’s most prestigious golf clubs.

Eduardo García, President of the Golf Committee at Club Campestre Tijuana, explained that the tournament was created to offer a high-level competitive format under the stroke play modality—a 36-hole, no-cut event played without handicaps.

The competition will feature the following categories: Championship, AA, A, B, C, and D. Matches will be played in groups of five to optimize course use, with the Championship category starting at 9:00 a.m. and the remaining categories teeing off at 8:00 a.m.

Although registration is open to men 16 years and older (both members and non-members), most categories are already full. Only about 20 of the initial 135 spots remain, so organizers recommend registering soon at the Club Campestre offices.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category, and during the awards luncheon, there will be a $1,000 raffle. The Club Champion, or Low Gross Member Champion, will receive a trophy, $1,000 cash prize, and a reserved parking space.

Organizers emphasized that precision, consistency, and mental strength will be key to standing out in this demanding tournament.

“This is the first event of its kind, designed to truly determine the best player in each category. Each division is separated by just three strokes, so everyone plays on equal footing,” said Jorge Fimbres, Club Campestre Tijuana board member.

Despite forecasts of rain, the tournament will go on as scheduled—something Fimbres believes will only highlight the determination and skill of the participants.

Professional golfer Mateo Mergal explained that the stroke play format is based on total strokes over the rounds:

“All players compete together and are responsible for ensuring everyone follows the rules. The winner is simply the one with the fewest strokes.”

The event will be supervised by an official rules judge from the Mexican Golf Federation, ensuring strict adherence to regulations. Among the key rules to be enforced are:

  • Players must hole out on every hole.
  • Scorecards must be signed with accurate counts; unsigned cards may result in disqualification.
  • No mulligans (second chances) will be allowed.
  • Balls must be marked with a personal identifier.
  • The “Oyes” contest format (closest to the pin) will not be used.
