The gentle giants of the rodent world have a new home in Baja California: Capybara Village, a unique interactive habitat designed for family entertainment and environmental education, officially opened its gates this week at the heart of the Pai Pai Ecotourism Park.

The new space brings children and adults face-to-face with the planet’s largest—and perhaps most charismatic—rodents, aiming to foster a deeper connection to wildlife conservation.

The inauguration reinforced the state government’s commitment to biodiversity and creating spaces for responsible human coexistence with nature.

Governor Marina del Pilar presided over the opening ceremony, praising the park’s team for their dedication.

“I want to acknowledge the entire Pai-Pai team for their enthusiasm and love in creating this project, which provides shelter for many animal species. We are proud to have a special place for the capybaras, which are children’s favorite animals,” she said.

She highlighted the park as a benchmark for regulatory compliance in environmental matters and a model for responsible tourism and animal protection in the state.

Baja California is a state that loves animals, she added, noting that government institutions like the State Secretariat of the Environment and Sustainable Development are facilitators of such noble projects that promote species conservation, well-being, and development.

“Here we see the great love with which they care for the animals, in a family-friendly space that also has great gastronomic options and will become one of the favorite places for national, local, and foreign tourists,” she added.

Meanwhile, Edgar Pérez Ortiz, founder and general director of the Pai-Pai Ecotourism Park, said that Capybara Village represents a significant milestone where conservation, education, and responsible tourism intertwine to leave a mark on present and future generations.

He described the village as a collective effort that offers families and students a chance to interact with a charismatic South American species, serving as a reminder that all life deserves care and respect.
