GUADALAJARA Federal police recaptured on Monday one of the most wanted men in Baja California who had escaped from a hospital in July.
Police agents captured Héctor Eduardo Guajardo Hernández, nicknamed "El Güicho," along with three other persons, according the federal public safety department.
Guajardo, 33, escaped on July 17 from a hospital in Mexico City, where he was being treated after being detained in Baja California in May.
Authorities said that Guajardo ran the Sinaloa cartel's operations in Baja California after its boss, Teodoro "El Teo" García Simental, was captured.
They believe Guajardo participated in one of the deadliest attacks in Baja California, the massacre last fall of 13 people at a drug rehabilitation center in Tijuana. And he's a suspect in dozens of cases, including the killing of 10 law enforcement officers in various assaults.
Guajardo was initially detained in May following a firefight in Mexicali that killed one suspect and left him injured. He was at the Mexico City hospital for follow-up care when he escaped, allegedly with the help of federal police agents.
After escaping, Guajardo made his way to the municipality of Tecamachalco, in the nearby state of Puebla, where he hid until Friday, authorities said. He then traveled to the state of Jalisco, where he hid in Tepatitlán and Zapopan, in the Guadalajara area, where he was captured.
Guajardo and the three other suspects were transferred to Mexico City, where they face a new round of charges.
