TAMAULIPAS. A video started to circulate over social media last weekend showing the violent reaction by Jorge Valdez Vargas, a member of Mexico's progressive party known as PRD, against Fernando Martinez Rodriguez. Martinez is a transvestite known by the nick-name "La Mayra" who leads neighbors in the municipality of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas and was speaking out about electoral fraud during recent preliminary elections.
The transvestite was slapped in the face by the politician precisely on election day. It was all caught on video by bystanders recording on their cellphones, who used this footage to later report the incident to authorities.
The video shows the politician, who also is the President of the State Security Commission, slap an individual dressed in pink and caused others to follow suit following a verbal attack. Once the transvestite man was slapped by the representative a woman did as well causing him to fall to the floor where he continued to receive blows by other people also affiliated with the progressive party , this according to reports by local media.
The news has generated lots of commentary over social media, which by and large considers this behaviour from a representative as unacceptable.
This is especially so considering that it comes from a progressive candidate , who should be more tolerant of minorities such as the person that was attacked.
