CBP Launches Program to Reroute Traffic Lanes at San Ysidro Port of Entry

This CBP program will provide SENTRI users with two points of entry into the San Ysidro vehicle lanes, instead of only one.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced a pilot program for the San Ysidro Port of Entry that will convert general traffic lanes into dedicated lanes for SENTRI members, a move aimed at streamlining border crossings while maintaining security.

Set to begin in mid-November, the program will convert the all traffic lane on Tijuana’s 2nd Street into an exclusive lane for the SENTRI Program.

Medical Passes and SENTRI to Continue Operating

General medical pass lanes will continue to operate on Paseo de los Héroes, and the existing SENTRI access lane on Avenida Padre Kino will function as usual.

The change will provide users with two points of entry into the San Ysidro vehicle lanes, rather than the single access point available today.

The initiative, which has the backing of the Mexican government, is designed to enhance operational efficiency without compromising national security. During the four-month trial, other crossing options will remain unchanged. CBP officials will closely monitor and evaluate the program to determine its long-term viability and whether to make the changes permanent.

Pilot Program Could End Early

The agency noted that while the changes prioritize security and effectiveness, the pilot could be terminated early if unforeseen challenges arise.

“Our top priority remains safeguarding our nation and maintaining the integrity and security of our border,” said San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin. “Through this pilot program and our continued partnership with the Government of Mexico, we are identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and improve the border crossing experience at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, devoting more attention to high-risk travelers and vehicles.”
