TIJUANA The city's residents can have their cake and eat it too on Friday at the Cultural Center, where a giant "rosca de reyes" will be served to the public during the celebration of Epiphany.
The traditional "rosca," or cake, will be a record 1,280 long and weigh 5,500 pounds and will be mounted outdoors around the center's IMAX dome theater. There, the public can partake of a piece for free starting at 4 p.m.
The celebration of the "Día de los Reyes Magos," celebrating the arrival of the Magi to the infant Jesus, is a Mexican tradition. The circular cake is decorated with colorful dried fruit simulating the jewels that might have adorned the crowns of the three Magi.
Nowadays, Mexican families and friends share a slice of cake and hot chocolate on the evening of Jan. 6.
Several companies will come together to serve the rosca, including Pastelería El Molino, Jersey Dairy, Chocolate Ibarra and Café Sabarex.
A team of 45 bakers and assistants will create the cake using 1,870 pounds of flour, 330 pounds of eggs, 550 pounds of sugar, 550 pounds of butter and 66 pounds of baking powder.
A total of 660 pounds of dried fruits will be used to decorate the cake, including figs, papaya, cherries, raisings and quince.
The cake will be 1,280 feet long, a record, given that last year's rosca served around the Cecut was 1,120 feet long.
That's a lot of cake, no matter how you cut it.
