Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán Loera will not be immediately extradited to the U.S. once they capture him, said Mexico's Secretariat of Interior, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong.
Osorio Chong explained that the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel has an open legal process in Mexico. "In order to extradite a person, there needs to be a decision taken by a judge in the U.S. just as we do it too," he said to Grupo Fórmula.
However, the U.S. government made a formal extradition request of "El Chapo" on June 25, weeks before his escape. After "El Chapo" escaped from maximum-security federal prison "El Altiplano", the capo's legal defense team filed for legal protection in order to appeal for his extradition order, which was granted.
The Secretariat of Interior denies that U.S. forces are in Mexico working towards El Chapo recapture, on the other hand, the DEA and other U.S. agencies have assured they are currently collaborating with Mexican authorities in the search of the Cartel's leader.
