Tijuana.- A seven-year-old child was shot to death and his father gravely wounded Sunday afternoon when gunmen attacked them while they were driving in an eastside neighborhood, authorities reported.

The assault was the latest in a wave of violence that left a death toll of eight in various areas of the city between Friday and Sunday.

According to police, the boy and his father were attacked while traveling on the Capistrano ramp in the neighborhood that bears the same name. The child died at the scene and his father was transported to a hospital. Investigators found 18 casings for an AK-47.

The state Attorney General’s Office had reported another death earlier in the day. The body of an unidentified man, in his mid-thirties, was found around 7 p.m. with two gunshots to the head on Las Águilas Boulevard in the Colinas del Sol neighborhood.

On Saturday, authorities logged four homicides.

The first report came in around 5:30 p.m., when the decomposing body of a man was found at the bottom of a ravine in the Los Pinos district. He had marks around his neck.

At 6:50 p.m. a man was shot to death on Lázaro Cárdenas street in the Niño Artillero neighborhood. The victim was identified as José Antonio Vázquez Muñiz. He had been shot twice in the head.

Another attack was reported at 10:05 p.m. against a group of people who were on avenida La Paz in Las Torres neighborhood.

A man identified as Marco Antonio Zúñiga Ibarra, 30, was shot four times and died at the scene.

A little before midnight a man, identified as Javier González Palma, 42, was shot to death on 11th Street in the Ejido Matamoros neighborhood.

On Friday, state authorities reported two homicides. The first victim was identified as Leonardo Rocha Ramírez, 32, who was shot to death on Salvador Rosas Magallón Boulevard, in colonia Manuel Paredes.

The second victim was identified as Luis Ramón Almanza Cerda, 42, who was shot eight times in the neighborhood of Colinas del Rubí.

Authorities have noted that the number of murders in the first two months of the year decreased in Tijuana compared to the same period of last year. The killings continue, however, with three or more killings reported in a single day this year, most of it attributed to the drug-trafficking cartels fighting to control the border region.
