The Mexican government has announced a new benefit for citizens returning from the United States, whether through voluntary return or deportation. Under the measure, nationals can now import their household goods and personal belongings one time only, without paying import taxes and without the usual requirement of hiring a customs broker.
Officials explained that the process is designed to ease the transition for individuals and families moving back to Mexico after living abroad.
What You Can Bring
The list of eligible goods is broad, covering nearly everything needed to set up a household: clothing, furniture, appliances, books, utensils, professional tools, and even works of art or science (provided they are not full collections intended for exhibitions).
Used household appliances are also permitted, including washing machines, refrigerators, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, mixers, and other domestic devices, as long as only one unit of each item is declared. Tools of the trade may also be brought in, with a maximum value of $5,000 USD.
Excluded items include vehicles, cash, checks, or other financial instruments exceeding $10,000 USD.
Personal Luggage and Tax Exemption
Returning travelers are also allowed to bring their personal luggage, which may include clothing, toiletries, electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, cameras, and game consoles, as well as books, toys, musical instruments, camping equipment, and sports gear.
Adults may carry up to 10 packs of cigarettes, 25 cigars, or 200 grams of tobacco, along with three liters of spirits and six liters of wine. Families traveling together can combine their exemptions, which apply to new purchases valued up to $1,000 USD duty-free.
Additionally, passengers may import up to three pets or companion animals (dogs, cats, birds, turtles, or small mammals) with the necessary health certificates and permits.
How to Apply
The application process can be completed online through the Mexican Foreign Ministry’s platform:
- Go to miconsulado.sre.gob.mx and schedule an appointment.
- Select the “Menaje doméstico” (household goods) procedure and download the goods declaration form.
- Submit proof of Mexican nationality (passport, INE voter ID, or consular ID card).
- Present the completed goods list, along with a simple power of attorney if someone else applies on your behalf.
Once the documentation is validated, the National Migration Institute (INM) will provide the steps to retrieve your goods at the designated customs office.
Key Points to Remember
- The process is completely free.
- It can be used only once.
- It is designed to support nationals returning from the United States.
Authorities encourage the Mexican community abroad to approach their nearest consulate for guidance and assistance throughout the process.
Are Vehicles Included?
Goods that cannot be included are vehicles and cash, checks, or other payable documents that exceed $10,000 US dollars or their equivalent.
