SAN YSIDRO.- Two weeks after the collapse of a construction platform, U.S. authorities have resumed the remodeling project at the port of entry, although with a change in how the work will be done.

Since early Tuesday, two SENTRI lanes were closed and construction workers could be seen in the area once more.

On Sep. 14, a platform collapsed over the first seven lanes, which were in operation, sending 11 people to the hospital and forcing the closure of the port of entry for 12 hours.

The platform had been erected to protect border-crossers and port staff from the overhead construction.

Now, work will only be done in lanes that are closed, according to the project’s main contractor, Hensel Phelps.

Despite the two-week closure, officials with the General Services Administration, which oversees port operations, said in a statement that the $577 million expansion project would not be delayed because it was ahead of schedule when the accident occurred.

The collapse remains under investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, Cal/OSHA.
