Corinthians 3-0 Xolos: First defeat for Tijuana in Libertadores

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL.- Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente suffered its first setback in the 2013 Copa Libertadores with a 3-0 loss to host Corinthians of Brazil, as part of the Group 5 Week 4 actions on Wednesday night at Estadio Pacaembu.

Alexandre Pato (2th minute), Paolo Guerrero (36th) and Paulinho (82nd) scored for Corinthians. Pato scored on a play that included the ball ricocheting off the crossbar, the right upright and the crossbar once more after a Renato Augusto shot.

Guerrero scored on a shot from the heart of the penalty box off a centered pass from the right. Paulinho sent in a soft header past Xoloitzcuintles goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo on a free kick into the area.

Club Tijuana came out with a fiery attack early in the second half but couldn’t find the net.

Club Tijuana (3-1-0, 9 points) remains in first place in the group despite the loss against Corinthians (2-1-1, 7 points), the Copa Libertadores defending champion and Club World Champion.

The Xoloitzcuintles beat this same Corinthians team last week 1-0 at Estadio Calient with a goal by Javier Gandolfi scored in the 65th minute of that match to give coach Antonio Mohamed’s team the win.

Club Tijuana is juggling two tournaments and will return home to prepare for LIGA MX action. The Xoloitzcuintles host Rayados de Monterrey Saturday Mar. 16 at Estadio Caliente in a Week 11 match of the 2013 Clausura.

The Xoloitzcuintles return to Copa Libertadores competition April 3 with a road match against San Jose de Oruro of Bolivia.
