Baja Californians woke up this Friday with some good and some bad news after learning that the vaccine against COVID-19 is about to arrive in the next few days in the state, however, the cases of coronavirus continue to increase in all municipalities.

According to Friday´s report by Health Secretary Alonso Pérez Rico, the state ended the week with one thousand 140 active cases, positioning Tijuana as the state's municipality with the highest number, going from 310 to 468, following Mexicali which increased from 338 to 389, Ensenada from 127 to 170, while Rosarito went from 31 to 38, Tecate from 26 to 28, San Quintín from 13 to 25 and San Felipe from 11 to 22.

"Being on January 8, what happened 14 days ago, exactly, on December 24? Fourteen days ago we had gatherings, and this is a true reflection of when people gather together, precisely when active cases are on the rise. Now we have to decrease and prepare for the next one which is on December 31st. The same thing that happened to us on October 31 happened to us on December 24 and we are waiting for the one on December 31," said the Secretary.

This led to the two largest localities in the region, Tijuana and Mexicali, entering the top 20 municipalities with most active cases in Mexico, the first occupying the 12th place and the other the 16th. On the other hand, in the last 24 hours 65 people were registered as having lost their lives due to COVID-19 in Baja California, as well as 317 new cases.

Among the most affected by this are both Mexicali and the border city, which total 14 thousand 426 positive cases (77 new cases) and 12 thousand 119 (141 new cases) respectively, of the 35 thousand 350 confirmed cases accumulated in the state.

Of the 5 thousand 782 unfortunate deaths from coronavirus that have occurred in the state so far, 2 thousand 518 occurred in Tijuana (34 new) and 2 thousand 297 in Mexicali (13 new). According to information from the Secretary, the current hospital occupation in the region is 78%, with 199 beds and 158 ventilators available.
