Donald Trump Jokes Venezuela Could Become 51st U.S. State

This is not the first time Trump has flirted with the idea of expanding U.S. territory in jest.

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again sparked debate after jokingly suggesting that Venezuela could become the 51st state of the United States. The remark, made on his Truth Social platform, came in response to a Venezuelan sports victory and quickly ignited a wave of reactions online.

In his post, Trump praised the South American nation before adding a tongue-in-cheek proposition:

“Wow! Venezuela defeated Italy tonight, 4-2, in the WBC (Baseball!) Semifinal. They are looking really great. Good things are happening to Venezuela lately! I wonder what this magic is all about? STATEHOOD, #51, ANYONE?” Trump wrote.

While the comment was clearly not a formal proposal, it drew attention given Trump’s history of making provocative, offhand remarks about territorial expansion.

This is not the first time Trump has flirted with the idea of expanding U.S. territory in jest. Over the years, he has occasionally mused about incorporating other nations, though never in an official capacity.

U.S.-Venezuela Relations

Just over two months have passed since the kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro in a U.S.-led military operation on January 3, 2026. That operation led to the collapse of his government and paved the way for a new political chapter in the bilateral relationship.

On March 6, the United States and Venezuela formally reestablished diplomatic and consular ties after a seven-year rupture. The move marks what the White House describes as the beginning of a “safe transition” under the interim leadership of Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed the acting presidency on January 5.

Though the current Venezuelan administration retains some familiar figures from the Chavista era, the Trump administration has made clear that Washington intends to maintain close oversight of the country’s political and economic direction.
