On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Taquería Hipódromo” located at Avenida Hipódromo 14. On this occasion he tried two tacos: a carne asada taco priced at $1.50 dollars ($30 dollars) and a vegetarian taco priced at $1.75 dollars ($35 pesos).

Carne Asada Taco

This taco has carne asada (grilled beef), onion, cilantro, guacamole, and is served on a handmade corn tortilla. When he opened the taco, the first thing Chef Danny noticed is that it didn’t have any salsa at all, not even “huevona sauce”. He added that the taco needed more filling, since it felt a little light when holding it.

When he took his first bite, Chef Danny stated that the tortilla was very dry and that he felt that the meat had been on the griddle too long, which made it lose its humidity, frying it. Though this is perfect for those who prefer their meat this way, our host said that he prefers his protein juicy to better appreciate its flavors. Although the guacamole was not watery guacamole, it was too light. Danny said that the taco needed some kind of sauce to dampen the ingredients a little bit more. This is why this taco gets a rating of 5.5.

Price: $1.50 dollars ($30 pesos)

Vegetarian Taco

This taco has nopal, lettuce, coriander, tomato, onion, guacamole, cheese and is served on a handmade corn tortilla. Due to several requests, he decided to try this taco for those who are following a diet or don’t eat meat. Although not all taquerias have this type of options, since this one did, Chef Danny decided to choose it.

Danny stated that when he saw it on the menu, he thought this taco was a grilled nopal taco, but it just ended up being a quesadilla with bandera sauce and nopal. He added that the Monterey Jack cheese was served in a good amount and the tortilla was quite humid, unlike the previous taco. This is why it gets a rating of 6.6.

Price: $1.75 dollars ($35 pesos)
