For the first time in its 57-year history, the 2026 Baja 1000 will start and finish in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur—marking a break from its traditional peninsula-spanning route. Twice named the best motorsport event in the world by USA Today, the Baja 1000 faces constant pressure to evolve, and organizers say the move is part of a strategy to keep the race at the forefront of international motorsport.

A Peninsula Race Every Three Years

Juan Tintos, a representative of Score International, the race’s organizing body, confirmed that the event is not abandoning its roots. The iconic peninsula-long route will return for the 60th anniversary in 2027, running from Ensenada, Baja California, to La Paz. Under the new format, that full-peninsula race will take place every three years.

“We want it to remain attractive for racers and fans globally,” Tintos said, stressing that innovation is key to keeping the event relevant to competitors and spectators alike.

The Future of Baja 1000

Tintos dismissed speculation that the shift represents a permanent departure from northern Baja. “It is false that the competition is definitively leaving Baja California,” he said, emphasizing the race’s deep connection to the region. He added that the 60th anniversary will feature VIP guests from motorsports and entertainment, as well as new innovations designed to celebrate six decades of history that have cemented the Baja 1000 as both a symbol of regional identity and a driver of international tourism.

A World-Class Event

The Baja 1000 continues to draw an international roster of competitors. Score International projects 275 teams from at least 15 countries will participate this year, underscoring its global appeal.

“At Score, we are always looking to innovate and create attractive races. This event is world-famous; even members of the Qatari royalty have come, and it’s common to find celebrities,” Tintos highlighted.

Teamwork and Local Support

Tintos also underscored the scale of coordination required to stage the race. “We’ve received strong support from the municipal government of San Felipe, the state and federal governments, as well as the private sector. It’s a huge effort, and we want to invite the entire community not to miss this great event,” he said.
