Three people have died from extreme cold weather in northern Mexico in the states of Chihuahua and Sonora.

One of the victims was a man in his 60s in the city of Navojoa, Sonora, according to Mexico’s Health Department (SSP, in Spanish), who also informed that in recent days, 10 people have died intoxicated due to exposure to carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion of organic matter, like firewood or alcohol.

Two people were also reported dead due to hypothermia in the Mexican northern state of Chihuahua, according to the Public Safety department. One of them was a senior citizen as well.

The Mexican Public Safety department called on this two states, as well as Baja California, to take precautions due to the intense cold forecast for the next 24 hours. Chihuahua expects a low of 16 °F and the northeastern region of Baja California expects a low of 26 °F.

With another cold front incoming, Mexico’s Department of Immigration recommends immigrants to avoid the northern border region of the country.
