The Baja California government, led by Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, is stepping up support for the state’s creative industries and spotlighting local talent making waves on national and international film stages. The aim is to boost the work of both established and emerging filmmakers while strengthening the state’s cultural identity.
Governor Ávila Olmeda noted that her administration is working to expand screening opportunities and reinforce regional production through the Baja California Film Commission, part of the state’s Department of Economy and Innovation (SEI). This approach, she said, integrates art, the economy, and regional heritage.
Among the key initiatives is “BC by BC,” a film showcase that connects audiences with productions made in Baja California using local talent, crews, and resources. The program celebrates the creativity emerging from the state and helps these works reach new audiences.

The latest edition takes place this Wednesday, August 13, with free screenings of “Soy lo que nunca fui” and “Entre las cuerdas” at Cinépolis Plaza Río in Tijuana and Cinépolis Plaza San Pedro in Mexicali. Screenings begin at 6:00 p.m., and the governor thanked the theater chain for opening its screens to regional productions.
“Soy lo que nunca fui” marks the feature debut of young director and film graduate Rodrigo Álvarez. “Entre las cuerdas” is by independent filmmaker Fernando A. Fisher, born in San Diego and based in Tijuana, who began making short films at a young age.
Governor Ávila Olmeda praised both directors for raising the profile of Baja California cinema with high-quality productions.

Abelardo Vázquez Ramos, Deputy Secretary of Creative Industries at SEI, said the showcase demonstrates the ability of the state’s creative community to produce distinctive, high-caliber content. Film Commissioner Javier Espinoza Medina added that both titles have earned recognition at festivals in Mexico and abroad, confirming the quality of Baja California filmmaking.
“Soy lo que nunca fui” has won Best Film at the Guanajuato International Film Festival, the Audience Award at Cine Las Américas Film Festival, the Jury Award and Distribution Award at the Ensenada International Film Festival, and Best Film at the Hola México festival in Los Angeles.

“Entre las cuerdas” has received Best Film and Best Director at Sweden’s Luleå International Film Festival, the Audience Choice Award at the Lift-Off Filmmaker Sessions in London, and Best Film at Thespian Cinema Fest 2025 in Los Angeles.
