Herrera held his first press conference in Brazil on Sunday and admitted that he still did not know who would be the man to stand in between the post for Mexico. The time for the 'keepers' to prove themselves is now over and Herrera must not make a decision of whether to send out Guillermo Ochoa or Jesus Corona.
During the four World Cup preparation matches Corona started in goal during the first match against Israel at the Estadio Azteca. He played about 70 minutes of the match before having to be subbed out due to a knock to the head from teammate Francisco Javier Rodriguez. He also played the first half of the final preparation match against Portugal.
Ochoa on the other hand started and played the full 90 minutes during the second match against Ecuador in Dallas, Texas. El Tri took a 3-1 win on that night. He also came in and replaced Corona for the second half of the final match against Portugal where Mexico took a 1-0 loss.
The third choice goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera also had his shot during the third match where Mexico lost 1-0 to Bosnia in Chicago. The Toluca shot-stopper did not impress enough to take Corona or Ochoa down from the conversation of who should be the starter.
"El Piojo" Herrera said that on Sunday night he would make his decision and inform the players on Monday morning. The media and fans will most likely find out the decision come Thursday when Herrera announces his starting lineup for the Friday match against Cameroon.
In the meantime while Mexico has no official goalkeeper, it was Manchester United Striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Club America right wing-back Paul Aguilar who took the gloves and played in goal during the scrimmage practice session on Sunday afternoon.
