Baja California is undergoing one of the most significant upgrades to its electrical grid in decades, driven by an unprecedented wave of federal investment secured under Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda. The governor announced that the state has received roughly 74 billion pesos—about $4.2 billion USD—to modernize power infrastructure and expand access for households across the region.

Since taking office, her administration has worked closely with federal leaders to strengthen the state’s energy network. She credited the support of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and current President Claudia Sheinbaum for helping secure record-level funding for the sector.

A major portion of the investment—more than 10 billion pesos, or about $570 million USD—is dedicated to a new 550-kilometer (342-mile) transmission line that will connect Baja California to the state of Sonora. Officials say the link is essential for meeting rising energy demand, improving system reliability, and boosting operational security across the region.

Additional upgrades include the construction and expansion of other transmission lines, backed by nearly 8.8 billion pesos (about $500 million USD) in new funding.

Modernization of the existing grid is also moving forward, with more than 2.8 billion pesos (about $160 million USD) allocated to improve coverage, strengthen infrastructure, and enhance service performance.

The governor emphasized that these projects reflect a shared commitment between her administration and federal authorities to improve quality of life in Baja California through modern, reliable, and efficient energy systems.
