To ensure that no child or teenager misses out on education, the Baja California government, together with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), has relaunched the “Let’s Keep Learning in the Hospital” program, which enables young patients to continue their studies while undergoing medical treatment, Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda announced.

“This interinstitutional agreement represents an important step in the social transformation we are promoting in Baja California, always prioritizing the education of our little heroes and heroines who are fighting tough battles and deserve our full support,” the governor stated.

She recalled that the program provides Basic Education—from Preschool to Secondary School—to hospitalized children or those frequently attending outpatient appointments. After a pause due to the pandemic, efforts were made to revive the initiative and facilitate a return to classes for children once their health improves, the governor noted.

Beyond academic support, this educational assistance aids in the emotional recovery of patients by providing them with a routine and a learning environment that promotes their physical and mental well-being.

Teaching is tailored to each situation: there are hospital classrooms for those who can move around, and bedside instruction for those requiring rest or isolation, as outlined in the agreement.

“This program has proven to be an invaluable tool in reducing educational gaps and enabling a swift return to school and daily life, even in challenging circumstances like hospitalization,” Secretary of Education Irma Martínez Manríquez underscored.

In its first phase, the program will operate in three IMSS hospitals in Baja California: Regional Hospital No. 1 and Hospital No. 20 in Tijuana, and Gynecology-Pediatrics Hospital No. 31 in Mexicali.

IMSS will prepare the spaces, provide furniture, ensure internet access, and register eligible patients for educational support, provided their medical conditions allow it.

The Secretariat of Education will supply books, materials, and trained teachers to assist children and teenagers, following official educational standards and health protocols.

The agreement will remain in effect until August 31, 2027, and guarantees the protection of minors’ personal data, reinforcing Baja California’s commitment to the right to education under any circumstances.
