Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda reported a significant 35.8% drop in homicides between September 2024 and July 2025 during a National Security Cabinet meeting presided over by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The meeting, designed to assess results and coordinate security strategies across all levels of government, served as a platform for the governor to outline the state’s recent progress. Governor Marina del Pilar credited the dramatic reduction in violence to a coordinated strategy with federal authorities and targeted actions in the state’s priority zones.

As part of the federally-backed Northern Border Operation, state and federal forces have secured illegal firearms, vehicles, and drugs, effectively weakening criminal organizations operating in the border region.

“We are seeing a decline in practically all crimes in our state. Reduction in homicides is around 35%, an achievement reached thanks to the support of SEDENA, the National Guard, the Navy, and coordination among our local authorities,” the governor said.

She also emphasized that the state’s security strategy rests on the coordination between all levels of government, strengthened operational intelligence, and addressing the underlying social causes of violence.

Baja California Makes Progress on Fight Against Poverty

Governor Marina del Pilar also met with President Sheinbaum to strengthen coordination on social policies. This follows the president’s announcement last week regarding nationwide poverty reduction.

The governor highlighted that a joint effort, focused on those most in need, is critical to eradicating extreme poverty in the state.

According to INEGI figures, extreme poverty in Baja California was reduced to just 0.4% in 2024. This contributes to a national trend that saw 13.4 million people lifted out of poverty between 2018 and 2024.
