In an effort to promote clean energy and reduce polluting emissions, Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda has inaugurated a new electric vehicle charging station at State Institute for Sustainable Mobility (IMOS) facilities in Mexicali.

During the inauguration, the governor emphasized that environmental protection remains a top priority for her administration, stating that concrete actions are essential to advancing cleaner and more sustainable mobility across the region.

“Cities can no longer be envisioned without this new component in mobility. This is the direction Baja California is heading, and Mexicali will not be left behind,” the governor said.

The charging station will primarily service patrol vehicles from IMOS, as well as official electric vehicles from other state agencies, according to Jorge Alberto Gutiérrez Topete, director of IMOS Baja California.

“Mexicali is one of the cities where most of energy consumed comes from renewable sources. Mexicali completes the green cycle. The energy powering these vehicles comes from the geothermal plant, which does not rely on fossil fuels,” he said.

Beyond its operational function, the new facility is designed to serve as an educational space. It features a timeline tracing the history of electromobility aimed at fostering environmental awareness among children, as well as a mural celebrating the history of the state capital.

Elvia Martínez Santos, head of the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development of Baja California, added that the new infrastructure will contribute directly to reducing atmospheric pollutants from the transportation sector, marking a key step forward in the state’s sustainability goals.
