Baja Californian Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda has reaffirmed her commitment to women by providing job opportunities and breaking down gender barriers to promote inclusivity in several work environments.

The state governor announced that the sixth generation of the “Mujeres al Volante” program, which has already trained 120 graduates to date, launched in Mexicali during February.

“In this government, we support women in breaking down barriers, pursuing their dreams, and becoming role models for new generations. I invite you to stay alert and take advantage of these opportunities, because this is a space for all of you,” Governor Ávila Olmeda said.

According to the Institute of Sustainable Mobility (IMOS), the program was created in response to the need to increase the number of professional public transport and personnel operators, an industry facing a significant workforce shortage in Baja California.

Through this comprehensive training program, women learn to operate transport vehicles. Upon completion, they are guaranteed appropriate, safe, and well-paid employment, which directly benefits both operators and users of this service.

“The success of Mujeres al Volante has been resounding. Its impact has been so positive that it has inspired states like Oaxaca and the State of Mexico to replicate this initiative. Soon, it will also become a reality in Quintana Roo,” Governor Marina del Pilar said.

She noted that Mujeres al Volante is a life-changing program in which, in addition to obtaining appropriate employment, many single women show their professionalism and commitment in a field traditionally dominated by men.

“Before taking the Mujeres al Volante course, I worked in a factory. I am a mother of three children, and they are proud that their mom is one of the first female transport operators in the state,” said María Mónica López, a graduate of the second generation in Mexicali and currently a driver for Transporte Violeta in the state capital.

The operation of this important program is coordinated between the Institute of Sustainable Mobility (IMOS), the Secretariat of Work, the National Employment Service, and the CECATI system, which provides the training. The SETTEPI corporation, as a strategic ally, supplies training vehicles for practice and is one of the main employers of the program’s graduates.

Currently, Mujeres al Volante is offered in the municipalities of Mexicali and Tijuana, with plans to expand it to Tecate and Ensenada. Women who are interested can register by sending a WhatsApp message to 686 247 0238.

Training is completely free, as is the issuance of their first Class B driver’s license. Requirements to participate include being between 18 and 50 years old, as well as providing documents such as a birth certificate, CURP, RFC, and a driver’s license.
