Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda has positioned the state as a pioneer in building a cleaner, more modern, and safer transportation system by introducing electric taxis. This marks a significant step toward electromobility, delivering direct benefits for both residents and the environment.

“We are very proud that Mexicali is leading the way nationally in this type of mobility. The world is moving toward electromobility, and Baja California will not be left behind,” she said during the official launch ceremony of the project in the state capital.

The governor noted that in this first phase, four fully electric taxis are already in operation, supported by a local company. She emphasized that this project aligns with state public policies and President Claudia Sheinbaum’s vision to protect the environment, improve transportation, and provide better service to all users.

She also acknowledged the efforts of young transport workers with family roots in the industry, who are now leading the technological transition with comfortable, modern, and fully electric vehicles designed to meet the city’s needs and its extreme climate.

Jorge Alberto Gutiérrez Topete, Director of Baja California’s Institute for Sustainable Mobility, highlighted that these are 2026 BYD DOLPHIN MINI vehicles — next-generation, zero-emission cars that consume little energy and offer a safer experience.

He stressed that, in collaboration with the State Energy Commission and the Department of Economy, work is underway to develop public infrastructure for charging stations, encouraging more such vehicles to operate and motivating citizens to choose fossil fuel-free vehicles in the future.

Electricab representative José Roa Aguilera revealed that the plan includes seven vehicles by the end of this month and 50 in the next phase. The service operates with a radio dispatch system, has charging infrastructure, and offers more affordable fares due to reduced operating costs.

“This is a small but firm step. We want to be at the forefront in the state, setting an example that can be replicated in other municipalities but focused first on the city we love which is Mexicali,” he said.
