At 51 years old, Hannah Shirley has become the world’s oldest pygmy hippo in managed care, a historic milestone the San Diego Humane Society is celebrating. Living out her golden years at the Ramona Wildlife Center in California, she is a cherished ambassador for her vulnerable species.
Rescued in 2002 and Living a Dignified Life
Hannah was born on November 22, 1973, and was rescued in 2002 after being found living in inadequate conditions in a private backyard in Escondido, California. Since then, she has been part of the San Diego Humane Society’s protection program, where she has spent over two decades receiving specialized care.
Her current home is a 13,000-square-foot paddock, complete with a natural pond and pool. There, she enjoys back rubs, sprinkler showers, and her favorite food—all part of a routine designed for her physical and emotional well-being.

A Testament to the Impact of Animal Care
“Every day with Hannah Shirley is a gift,” Autumn Welch, Wildlife Operations Manager at the Ramona Wildlife Center, said. “Her playful spirit, resilience and sweet personality make her a truly special ambassador for her species — and a symbol of how excellent care can help animals thrive far beyond what’s expected.”

Can You Visit the Hippo?
While the Ramona Wildlife Center is not open to the public daily, it offers guided tours and special events where animal lovers can learn more about Hannah and the center’s other residents. Additionally, there are symbolic adoption and donation programs to help support Hannah’s and other rescued animals’ care.
