One of California’s most spectacular landmarks is celebrating a major milestone. Hearst Castle, the iconic hilltop estate in San Simeon, marks 100 years as one of the United States’ most significant historical and tourist destinations.

Located roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the palace rises atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. For a century, it has remained a must-see stop for travelers drawn to its old-world charm and breathtaking views.

A Monument with History

The castle was commissioned by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and designed by pioneering architect Julia Morgan. Construction wrapped up in 1947, and ever since, the estate has stood as a symbol of opulence, art, and architectural ambition.

Among its most distinctive spaces is the Gothic study, where Hearst would personally review his newspapers each night.

A Palace of Grand Proportions

Hearst Castle is nothing short of massive. It boasts 177 rooms, including 58 bedrooms, 60 bathrooms, 18 sitting rooms, and 45 fireplaces spread across four levels. Outside, visitors find sprawling gardens, fountains, terraces, and two legendary pools: the outdoor Neptune Pool and the indoor Roman Pool.

A Playground for Stars and Exotic Wildlife

Over the years, the castle hosted hundreds of members Hollywood royalty including Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, and Joan Crawford, cementing its reputation as a playground for the era’s elite.

At one point, the property also featured one of the world’s largest private zoos, with exotic animals from across the globe.

Today, Hearst Castle is a National Historic Landmark and one of California’s most visited sites. Guided tours allow guests to explore its theater, library, billiard room, and richly decorated halls filled with art and antiques.

Access is by guided tour only. Ticket prices start at $30 for adults and %15 for children ages 5 to 12. Visitors are strongly advised to book in advance, especially during peak season when crowds are largest. For those driving from San Diego, the trip takes just over six hours by car.
