After yesterday’s presidential election results in Venezuela, Henrique Capriles has now requested a recount, where Nicolas Maduro turned out with 50.66% of votes in his favor, while Capriles finished with 49.07% of the votes.

In his first speech after the elections, the opposition candidate said, "We will not recognize the result until they count every Venezuelans vote." Meanwhile, the Electoral Council of Venezuela had already announced Nicolas Maduro as the new president of Venezuela.

Nicolas Maduro

Nicolas Maduro on his part said that his victory was clear, and that he was willing to open all ballot boxes and recount the votes because he had nothing to hide. After his victory speech, Maduro also said that he was going to go to Chavez’s grave to pay his respects.

Even in the absence of Hugo Chavez, many people stayed loyal to him. In December 2012, when Chavez announced his absence for cancer treatment, he asked the Venezuelan people to support Maduro if he would for some reason not be able to continue on. As it turns out, this is how things came to be.

Raul Castro, Evo Morales, Cristina Fernandez and Rafael Correa are some of the leaders that have already congratulated Nicolas Maduro for his victory.
