Hillary Clinton spoke at the Children's Defense Fund gala in Washington today, her first public appearance since acknowledging her defeat against Republican Donald Trump in the United States presidential election last week.
In her speech, Clinton confessed that since losing the election she has had moments in which she has not wanted to leave her home again:
"I will admit, coming here tonight wasn't the easiest thing for me. There have been a few times this past week where all I wanted to do was curl up with a good book and our dogs and never leave the house again."
The former secretary of state acknowledged that the divisions in the country are deep, so she called on her followers to "remain committed at all levels," to fight for the country and for values.
"I know that many are deeply disappointed by the the results of the election. I am too, more than I could ever express … but our campaign was never about a person or an election, it was about the country we love and about building a United States with hope, " she said.
Hillary defeated Trump in the counting of overall popular votes, but not in states, of which she lost several, and some of them had gone to Democrats in the elections of 2008 and 2012.
