For one day only, residents and visitors will have the chance to step back in time and ride a true piece of San Diego history. In celebration of Presidents’ Day on Monday, February 16, the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is bringing its iconic first red trolley back to the tracks.
The MTS announced that the vintage streetcar, the historic 1001 U2, will operate exclusively on the downtown Silver Line loop. This allows passengers to experience public transit as it was decades ago while enjoying a scenic ride through the heart of the city.

“The San Diego Vintage Trolley car is in many respects better than it was when it left the factory in 1946,” said Harry Mathis, Chairman of the Metropolitan Transit System. “This beautiful vehicle is like a time machine. Riding on it can you take you back to the days when these wonderful streetcars were in service all over San Diego.”

The service will begin at the 12th & Imperial Transit Center. The trolley is scheduled to depart every hour on the hour, starting at 9:07 a.m., with the final departure of the day at 5:07 p.m.
People interested can board the vintage trolley at any downtown stop along the 30-minute route.
