Tijuana International Airport is accelerating a major expansion project backed by a new five-year investment plan by the Pacific Airport Group (GAP), designed to boost operational capacity and enhance efficiency for the growing number of passengers using the terminal each year.
In the third quarter of 2025, significant airfield upgrades were completed, including a major expansion of the commercial aircraft apron. The upgraded apron now spans more than 41,000 square meters (approximately 441,000 square feet) across two new zones, east and west of the existing area, providing additional parking positions for aircraft.
A new taxiway also began operations in July, a critical addition which helped improve the flow and efficiency of air traffic.
The next phase of construction, set to begin in the coming months, will focus on the terminal building itself. The expansion will add seven new boarding gates, increase baggage claim carousels by 50%, and install 46 additional check-in counters. With an estimated completion date of 2029, this phase will increase the terminal’s total surface area by 47%, preparing it for future passenger demand.
The airport also announced the upcoming installation of 10 self-service check-in kiosks this November, promising a faster and more flexible travel process.
New Possible Flight Routes at Tijuana International Airport
Alongside the physical expansion, the airport is looking to broaden its reach. Officials revealed a list of “potential routes” currently under consideration, including:
- Mérida
- Tulum
- Huatulco
- Puerto Escondido
- Villahermosa
- Tokyo
- Tampico
- Bogotá
- Chetumal
- Minatitlán
- Havana
- Lima
- Guatemala City

- Houston
“These works represent a fundamental step towards establishing Tijuana Airport as a modern, safe, and efficient airport with quality infrastructure to improve the travel experience and strengthen regional connectivity, which contribute to the economic and touristic development of Baja California and the entire country,” Airport Director Carlos Salgado de la Peña said.
Over the past five years, Tijuana International Airport has seen a 40% surge in passenger traffic, jumping from 8.9 million travelers in 2019 to 12.5 million in 2024. The momentum continues in 2025, with over 9.5 million passengers served between January and September alone, averaging one million passengers per month.
This growth has cemented the airport’s position as one of Mexico’s most important and busiest due to its connectivity and strategic location on the northern border.
