U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced a dramatic decline in illegal border crossings, attributing the sharp drop to policies enacted under President Donald Trump’s administration.
CBP Reports Decrease in Illegal Crossing Attempts
According to recent data, attempted illegal entries have fallen by 84% this fiscal year compared to the same period last year.
The figures were disclosed by Roberto B. Dominguez, Acting Deputy Chief of Operations at CBP headquarters, during a press briefing Thursday. He noted that the decrease has been especially pronounced since President Trump took office.
July proved to be the most significant month yet, with a 90% reduction in attempted crossings compared to July of last year. Arrest statistics illustrate the steep decline: while some 60,000 individuals were apprehended in July 2024, that number fell to just over 6,000 in July 2025.

Dominguez also issued a warning about criminal organizations designated as terrorist groups by U.S. authorities that are spreading misinformation to encourage migration. These groups are falsely claiming that U.S. asylum laws have been canceled or suspended.
In addition, there has been an overall decline in the demographics of those attempting to cross. The number of migrants from countries other than Mexico has decreased, with Mexican citizens now comprising the largest group attempting entry.
