Residents say the display, which counted over 70 Santas last December, has transformed the neighborhood into a holiday stop for families and visitors.

A festive row of inflatable Santa Claus figures now brightens the Old Carlsbad neighborhood each December, transforming a simple idea among neighbors into a growing local attraction that draws visitors from across the region.

According to news media outlet The Coast News, what began as a casual inspiration in 2019 has blossomed into a full-fledged community tradition. The exhibit, known locally as “Ho Ho Highland,” now features over 70 Santas lining the streets from Tamarack Avenue to Carlsbad Village Drive.

The tradition traces its origins to residents Michael and Theresa Seid, who moved to the Highland area just before the holidays five years ago.

“My wife saw a picture of a street in Toronto, the street was lined with these giant inflatable Santas. She floated the idea to two other neighbors, and some flyers were created and disseminated. We put one up, and others started to follow,” Michael said.

A Beloved Tradition

Now, the spectacle has become a seasonal destination. Families often take evening drives or leisurely strolls to admire the cheerful, glowing procession of Santas.

However, the tradition has not been without its challenges. In November 2023, the display was targeted by vandalism when an individual was recorded on camera slashing several of the inflatables.

Despite the setback, Michael has claimed that their Christmas spirit remains unbroken as the tradition continues to spread beyond Highland Drive. More figures, many purchased from home decor stores, keep popping up.
