Authorities in San Diego, California, are investigating the deaths of a family of three found in their home in the San Carlos community. David and Amy Voight, along with their younger daughter, whose name is being withheld, were found with gunshot wounds in what investigators are treating as a murder-suicide.
According to Amy Voight’s parents, the family had spent the day before the killings seeking help for David, who was experiencing a worsening mental health crisis. They said Amy attempted to obtain medical assistance for her husband the day before the incident, urgently taking him to a hospital.
However, receiving mental health care proved impossible, as counselors were unavailable and an appointment was required.
“Can you do anything to him to help him calm down? He’s frustrated, anxiety, depression,” a family member recalled Amy saying.
The following day, neighbors reported hearing strange noises before discovering the couple and their daughter shot to death.
“Our pain is just starting,” Amy’s parents said.
David Voight was a U.S. military veteran who served for years in the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His father-in-law, Jerry Austin, noted that he too suffers from post-traumatic stress stemming from his own service, and said all veterans should have immediate access to mental health support.
“My clinic that I go to is in Lancaster, California. It’s a small clinic. It is fantastic,” he said. “They greet you at the door. They take care of you. They are concerned about it,” he said.
No further statements have been released. The investigation remains open.
