Adela Navarro, general director of Semanario ZETA, has received multiple death threats in recent days. ARTICLE 19, an independent organization that defends freedom of expression and access to information, publicly denounced the situation, reporting that the journalist received eight intimidating phone calls between April 29 and May 16.

Each call delivered the same message: “Tell Adela Navarro to watch herself,” followed by an abrupt hang-up.

ARTICLE 19 reports that the calls were made to both outdated phone lines and the publication’s main number, none of which have caller ID, complicating efforts to identify the source. The organization believes the threats may originate from different individuals or locations.

According to their statement, the threats began shortly after ZETA published several reports exposing alleged acts of corruption involving multiple politicians.

San Diego Red Demands Government Response to Protect Adela Navarro

So far, ARTICLE 19 reports, authorities have failed to open an investigation or implement any meaningful protection measures that ensure Navarro’s safety. The organization has expressed concern over this institutional inaction, warning that it puts Adela Navarro and her team at even greater risk as they continue their daily reporting efforts.

The organization also calls on the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE) to immediately begin an impartial investigation with a gender perspective. At the same time, it urges the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists to implement effective security measures without delay.

San Diego Red stands firmly with Adela Navarro and Semanario ZETA, and joins the demand for immediate government intervention to safeguard her life and uphold press freedom in Mexico.
