Up to 40% of citizen participation is expected in the upcoming elections on Sunday, June 5, where Tijuana will elect a new mayor, along with the rest of Baja California and its other municipalities. According to Testa Marketing, a polling agency, the citizens’ interest in the election has grown significantly.

This sudden growth in voter awareness comes as a positive thing, as Baja California is one of the Mexican states with the lowest voter turnout. Ariosto Manrique, the agency’s director, this year’s turnout will be of about 35 and 40 points.

Mexican news outlet PluralMx made a survey where 38.3% of respondents did not have clear voting intentions. This survey was carried out between April 29 and May 2, 2016, to over 400 Tijuana residents, all above 18 years of age and with a valid voting credential.

However, 61.7% of interviewees said that, even though they virtually support one of the many candidates, they were not sure about going out to the ballots this June 5.

Baja California’s population has been one with the most abstentionism in Mexico when it comes to voting, a phenomenon that grew more and more since 1989.
