San Diego is preparing to host one of summer’s most moving celebrations: the Toro Nagashi Floating Lantern Festival, organized by the Japanese Friendship Garden (JFG) in Balboa Park. Taking place Friday, August 8, this beautiful tradition offers a meaningful way to honor the memory of loved ones, continuing a cherished Japanese custom passed down through generations.

What is Toro Nagashi?

Toro Nagashi is a traditional ceremony symbolizing the cycle of life’s closure. Floating lanterns, known as toro nagashi, are placed on the water with the wish of peacefully guiding the souls of the departed. During the event, attendees will have the chance to release their own candle-lit LED lanterns in the lower garden stream, creating a breathtaking nighttime scene filled with light, remembrance, and emotion.

Starting at 10:00 a.m., visitors can purchase and decorate one of the one hundred lanterns available at the Inamori Pavilion. These will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so early arrival is recommended to secure participation in this heartfelt experience.

Beyond the main ceremony, the event will feature live performances, food vendors, and a festive atmosphere surrounded by the beauty of the Japanese Garden. It’s an occasion to come together as a community, reflect, and connect with Japanese cultural traditions in one of San Diego’s most unique settings.

“We are thrilled to welcome everyone to this very special event. The Toro Nagashi Festival is a rare opportunity to unite as a community and celebrate the lives of our loved ones,” said the president of JFG.

Admission is free, and the festival is open to all who wish to take part in this meaningful experience.
