Macy’s has confirmed plans to close its historic department store at Grossmont Center in La Mesa as part of a sweeping nationwide restructuring. The location is among approximately 150 underperforming stores slated for closure under the retailer’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy.
The iconic store is scheduled to close during the first quarter of 2026. According to company statements, the closure is part of a broader initiative announced in 2024 to streamline operations and redirect investments toward high-performing locations and digital growth.
Liquidation sales at affected stores, including the Grossmont Center location, are expected to begin in mid-January and run for several weeks. An exact closing date for the San Diego County store has not yet been announced.
Situated at 5500 Grossmont Center Drive and founded in 1961, Grossmont Center is an open-air mall featuring major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Barnes & Noble. Macy’s has served as a historic anchor tenant there for decades.
