The harrowing story of Jason, a California man who suffered the amputation of his hand after encountering what authorities described as a bomb-like device, has come to light through a GoFundMe campaign launched by his family.
The incident unfolded on July 5 at Point St. George Beach in Crescent City, California, where Jason and his girlfriend were gathering leftover firework debris from the previous day’s Fourth of July celebrations. What was meant as a simple gesture to help tidy the shoreline turned catastrophic when Jason picked up an object that suddenly detonated.
The blast not only resulted in the loss of his hand but also left him with vision and hearing impairments. He is currently awaiting two additional surgeries following the amputation, and doctors have not yet determined whether his sight and hearing will fully return.

Jason’s family is now reaching out to the public for assistance. As the sole provider for a household of seven, he faces mounting medical expenses, and the road to recovery is expected to be long and costly. His loved ones are seeking donations to help cover immediate needs, as well as the ongoing costs once he is discharged from the hospital.
“What should have been a simple act of kindness turned into a life-changing emergency,” the family shared.
Funds raised through the campaign will go toward transportation for medical visits, essential medications, and hotel accommodations for Jason and his family during his treatment and rehabilitation.
