This occurred in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, when iron structures of the Mayan Train project were destroyed. According to information revealed, one of the columns fell on top of a car, though no injuries have been reported.
Some workers said that the rain softened some areas and the weight of the columns came crashing down. The area was cordoned off by agents of the Army and the National Guard, while the state is currently assessing damages and whether these projects could put workers at risk.
Comparisons with the Mexico City Metro Line 12
On May 2, 2021, a collapse at the Mexico City Metro Line 12 occurred when an elevated level that held the train collapsed. This structure and the train's final two wagons fell on Avenida Tláhuac, near Olivos Station, which caused a horrifying accident.
From 2014 to 2015, the road where this accident occurred experienced structural problems. In 2017, an earthquake caused damages in the area and though it was allegedly repaired, residents reported issues months later. Back then, the mayor of the city, Claudia Sheinbaum, hired a risk management firm to investigate causes of the collapse, and it was then linked to flaws in the construction of the bridge.
In December 2021, the city's attorney general filed charges against 10 former officials, including the project's director; since April 2023, these cases for homicide and property damage are still pending.
