Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz of Tijuana officially launched 66 new garbage collection routes this Thursday to expand and optimize cleaning services for the city’s Eastern zone, directly benefiting over 61,000 residents of the Natura neighborhood in the La Presa Este delegation.

At the launch event, the mayor highlighted how this expansion has increased the city’s garbage collection coverage to 98%, a substantial jump from the 60% recorded when his term began.

“For over 15 years, many families in Natura had to pay for private collection, but this service has now come to their homes at no extra cost. Of the 333 new routes established across Tijuana, 186 are dedicated to the Eastern zone,” Mayor Burgueño said.

He also emphasized that this achievement is a result of strong collaboration with federal and state governments, bringing unprecedented improvements to families in the East.

“For years, Tijuana’s growth outpaced its infrastructure. We are putting an end to that. We are investing in more routes, better street lighting, and improved services, with a special focus on the rapidly growing East side of the city,” he stated.

The new routes will provide weekly collection every Monday to 16,711 homes, 8 schools, and 15 parks. To support this expansion, the city has integrated 129 leased collection vehicles into its municipal fleet, a move projected to facilitate the collection of 462 tons of waste per week.

Virginia Vargas González, Secretary of Territorial and Urban Development, noted that the initiative is about more than just garbage pickup.

“This is a way to improve families’ quality of life. I thank the City Hall’s operational cleaning staff for their commitment and effort to reach every corner of the city, as the mayor has instructed,” she said.

Meanwhile, councilwoman Magaly Ronquillo Palacios reflected on the mayor’s campaign promise to transform Tijuana.

“Over a year ago, he visited families at their homes with this commitment. Today, we see that promise fulfilled, with public policies that truly put the well-being of Tijuana’s residents at the center,” she claimed.
