In a review of her administration’s first year, Mayor Norma Bustamante of Mexicali highlighted major advances in promoting social justice, citing a range of programs under her “Well-Being for All” initiative aimed at strengthening education, reducing inequality, and improving community spaces.

The mayor claimed that education will always be the key to continuing the transformation of Mexicali. As such, the municipal government delivered direct economic incentives to more than 3,768 students across primary, secondary, high school, and university levels. The program aims to support students’ formative years and prevent them from leaving their studies prematurely.

Pilar Centers in Mexicali

As part of its social justice agenda, the local government has launched Pilar Centers—Innovation, Freedom, Art, Education, and Knowledge Spots—in Mexicali. This model, originally created by President Claudia Sheinbaum, establishes community hubs that offer a variety of services and activities focused on health, economic development, education, culture, and sports.

The first of these centers was recently inaugurated at the Casa Digna facility, with a second location in the Portales community set to open soon.

Promotion of Sports

Mayor Bustamante also underscored the revitalization of public sports facilities as a cornerstone of community well-being. Key projects include the rehabilitation of the seven-a-side soccer field at Unidad Independencia, the renovation of the Boticas Pérez field, the construction of a new fast-pitch soccer field at Secondary School No. 14 in Lomas Altas, and improvements to the Villas del Colorado Public Park.

“The well-being of everyone has been the priority of my government during these four years at the helm of our capital. It is a priority that continues as we work to build a more just and humane Mexicali,” the mayor concluded.
