Mayor Norma Bustamante of Mexicali led the 124th anniversary celebration of Compuertas, honoring the town’s deep-rooted history and enduring legacy.

“We stand in one of the region’s most historically rich communities—the birthplace of the compuertas (gate system) that, more than 120 years ago, made possible the vital water flow to the Imperial and Mexicali valleys. I am deeply honored to be part of this celebration,” the mayor said, highlighting the community’s enduring legacy.

She also praised the families of Compuertas for their dedication in preserving and passing down the community’s heritage to new generations.
The event concluded with an artistic program featuring dance performances, poetry recitals, and historical retrospectives. Special recognition was also given to Lidia Mayoral Higuera and Olga Mayoral Bareño in gratitude for their invaluable contributions to the community.
