Last Wednesday, the government Playas de Rosarito commemorated the 140th anniversary of the legal registration of Rancho El Rosarito—a milestone that gave rise to what we now know as one of the most important coastal municipalities in Baja California.
During an emotional ceremony to pay tribute to the historical and cultural roots of the community, Mayor Rocío Adame Muñoz acknowledged that “there is no future without roots, and no transformation without memory.”

The mayor recalled that it was on May 14, 1885, when Don Joaquín Machado officially entered Rancho El Rosario into the Public Registry, marking a turning point in the history of this land. However, she emphasized that Rosarito’s history began much earlier, with the millennia-old presence of the Kumiai people, who inhabited the region for over three thousand years, calling it Huacatay and serving as its first guardians.
This historical retelling included key moments such as the founding of the San Miguel Arcángel de la Frontera Mission in 1787, the establishment of Ejido Mazatlán in 1938 thanks to a decree by President Lázaro Cárdenas, and the ongoing social and educational transformation the region underwent during the 20th century. Also highlighted were the establishment of the first educational institutions and the civic struggle that culminated in 1995, when Playas de Rosarito became the fifth municipality of Baja California.

“Today, we celebrate a strong identity, a vibrant community, and a deep commitment to the well-being of all,” the mayor said, reaffirming the current administration’s vision of placing the people at the center of decision-making and continuing to make progress toward a future of justice, equality, and dignity.
The ceremony concluded with the raising of the flag as a national symbol and a promise that Rosarito will remain a land of peace, culture, identity, and future.
