Mayor Rocío Adame led the community in the ceremonial lighting of the municipal Altar of the Dead at City Hall, paying special tribute to the late writer and feminist icon, Rosario Castellanos.

The lighting ceremony served as the cornerstone of the city’s Day of the Dead commemorations, symbolically welcoming the spirits of the departed for a night of spiritual and cultural reunion.

Importance of Keeping Traditions Alive

In her address, Mayor Adame emphasized the profound importance of these customs.

“We can leave many things for our families and for humanity to share. When a person departs, the memory begins, and that is something we cannot set aside. Mexico has that special connotation of seeing death as a part of life, and we must not lose it,” the mayor said.

She also echoed sentiments from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, noting that “Mexico is a country with enormous cultural wealth; our traditions and roots make us strong as a people.”

This year’s altar was dedicated to Rosario Castellanos, a pioneering figure in Mexican literature and feminism. Mayor Adame took a moment to reflect on Castellanos’s legacy, highlighting her work on gender inequality, the role of women in society, and the marginalization of indigenous peoples.

“Rosario Castellanos taught us that silence can also be a form of oppression, and breaking it is an act of courage. Without women, history is not possible; behind every achievement, there is always a woman participating and transforming her environment,” Mayor Rocío Adame said.

The altar, a collaborative effort by City Hall staff, featured traditional marigolds, candles, papel picado, photographs, and symbolic offerings.

The ceremony concluded with the recognition of the public servants and community members who contributed to the altar’s creation, reinforcing a shared sense of community.

The tribute honored not only Castellanos but also all women who have transformed pain into beauty and paved the way for future generations.

With this activity, the Playas de Rosarito government, headed by Mayor Rocío Adame, reaffirms its commitment to cultural promotion, the preservation of Mexican traditions, and the strengthening of the sense of community between citizens and government, honoring the memory of those who are part of Mexico’s cultural legacy.
