The administration of Mayor Rocío Adame Muñoz has reiterated Rosarito’s zero-tolerance policy against abuse and corruption in local law enforcement. The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) communicated this firm stance to residents and tourism partners, underscoring a commitment to public safety and institutional integrity.
Regarding the recent complaint from an American tourist who was extorted by a municipal officer—demanding a bank deposit of $700 USD for his release following an intervention in a couple’s dispute at the Misión Viejo resort on May 4—the municipal government acted swiftly and decisively.
Carlos Bernal Hinojosa, SSC Director of Crime Prevention, noted that a thorough internal investigation was carried out under the direct instructions of Mayor Rocío Adame Muñoz. The inquiry confirmed the responsibility of the detention cell officer in the incident, leading to his immediate dismissal. Additionally, arrangements were made for the full restitution of the extorted amount to the affected tourist.
“The mayor’s orders are clear and firm: abuses committed by our officers will not be tolerated. Our police are here to serve and protect our community and visitors, and any deviation from this principle will be punished to the fullest extent of the law and our internal regulations,” Bernal Hinojosa stressed.
The Municipal Police Director acknowledged that eradicating long-standing misconduct in the force is an ongoing and challenging process but reaffirmed the local government’s unwavering commitment to continuously purging its ranks. “We will not allow isolated acts of corruption to tarnish the honest and dedicated work of the vast majority of our officers,” he stated.
Bernal Hinojosa urged citizens and tourists not to remain silent in the face of any suspected police abuse and to promptly report any irregularities by calling 072.
“Your cooperation is essential to strengthening trust in our institutions and ensuring that Playas de Rosarito remains a safe and welcoming destination for all,” he said.
